ready to go

1:13 PM
Hello from the land behind the computer screen.

I leave safe and sweet Maryland in two weeks, and start my new life  in fashion PR on the 13th of September in New York. My lucky number.

We got a calendar of events yesterday. My first day will be in the midst of Fashion Week, so I will be working the Monique Lhuillier and Temperley London shows at Lincoln Center. I'm sad to miss the Simon Spurr show, but this is already too good of a dream to be true so I won't pout. We are told to wear all black on shows and special events so I've been formulating some killer outfits in my head. The only problem I have is that they all involve killer heels of some sort and I know I will be running around for 8+ hours. Not that it's never been done before, I am a bit worry about my feet. I'm very particular about feets (I know that was supposed to be foot). After 10+ years or so of wearing heels for a living, I am proud to say I have very soft feet, no callouses, nothing. All smooth and as appealing to the eye as feets can be haha. So other than that very vain and girly worry, I am very excited. I was bouncing off the walls yesterday.

The company's clients are amazing. When I went into my interview there was about 3 large boxes from ASOS sitting in the lobby.

Oh and in the midst of all this craziness, I got bangs!

xoxo,

SL

i took the plunge

12:33 AM

I've been wasting away at this very safe job here in Maryland.
As a little girl, like just about most girls, I've been in love with
clothes and fashion. But how realistic is that? Always taking the
safer route, I stuck to what was secure. I got a job I didn't really care
for to just pay the bills and be comfortable. But there was always a void.
So I started my non-profit in public relations and communications.
I have no formal traditional training. While my non-profit is just starting out,
I still have this urge to be amidst what I've always loved, because
after 3 years of wasting away, I've come to realize that
no matter how much they pay you, if you are not in love with your job,
if you don't enjoy waking up in the morning to go to work,
you will never be happy. Money doesn't fix everything. Maybe for a
moment, but in the long run, the void makes itself apparent again.

On Wednesday,
I sent out my resume for a fashion pr internship and got a response in
half a hour later. They wanted to interview me first thing in the morning.
So it was 2pm, I book the New York bus for 5:25pm
that afternoon and leave wearing what I wore that day to work.

It was 10:03AM this morning  when I wrote this entry.  My interview was at 10:30.

I wrote to a girlfriend:

"Im sitting around the corner sipping coconut water and having
a piece of chocolate. In 10 minutes I am walking over and my life will
either change or I will keep moving forward. The cabbie who drove me
here asked how I was. I said I was nervous because of my interview. And he
said 'you have to be confident. you have to express yourself'!"

It was a strange feeling today as I was walking to the interview, in the same work outfit I wore yesterday.
New York suddenly seems to open it's arms to me. I felt new energy.
Inviting energy.

About half an hour after the interview, I get a call back from the PR firm.

I got the internship.

I am giving up a salary for this.

But it means nothing. I will be doing what I love, amongst the things that drive me.
This is a dream. And I have a good feeling about it. I think this is the beginning of something new and exciting.
I'm finally doing what I always wanted to do in life.
The job starts in 2 weeks, right in the middle of Fashion Week in New York.

boo!

My new iphone skin. It makes me giddy just looking at it.

Get 'em here, babies.

velvet leggings

11:55 AM

Was browsing through shopbop's lookbook today, and I suddenly had the urge to acquire a pair of velvet leggings for the winter. That and a killer pair of heels. Something like these Elizabeth and James "Mason" 5 inchers. In some sort of dark mood, I feel like wearing all black.

XS left only. $23.40 down from $78. Get em fast!

On a casual outing, I would pair them with black flats, and a black drapey tshirt (Alexander Wang, perhaps) Quilted remains eternally classic and tasteful, like the Monolo Blahnik's above.

To go out, just change up to killer heels, a messy updo, dark eye makeup, and a slinky top, like this one from Pleasure Doing Business:

Really attracted to silver capped toe heels as of late. They look so sleek, almost like a well tailored suit.

packing light

3:46 PM
The key to packing light for a weekender is to bring one pair of flats, and one pair of killer heels in which all our outfits can be planned around. I wore these all last weekend.

sloppy

7:11 PM
Is anyone else underwhelmed by Urban Outfitter's fall catalog? For the first time I actually don't want to buy anything from them. The models were sloppy, depressed looking and dull. Maybe they were going for the 'real girl' look? But real girls are so much more charming, these girls look like they'd rather slit their wrist than be in this catalog. Perhaps they were going for the hipster "I'm too cool to brush my hair" feel, but a lot more depressing, unflattering and dirty looking?

Sometimes I wonder if these people are really trying to sell clothes, or maybe they ran out of ideas.

I love with every one of these girls!

deals and steals

11:21 AM
In the last few months, I don't think I've paid full price on any item of clothing/shoes. I still managed to snag some amazing things that were still in season and am now living proof that no one has to pay retail anymore, or go to Marshalls or whatever those stores are to get a steal.

Got to these babies as soon as Zara started their summer sale, so they still had a few left in my size. $50.
Don't you hate coming up on amazing sales only to find that there are only XL or L's left? The key to snatching up your size is to know when a sale is. Sales for a store's summer inventory start as early as July. And you can always make nice and ask a store associate when their next sale is so you can get first dibs.

Silk dress shirt from Zara $19.

I've yet to wear this dress that I got from Urban Outfitters, so no pictures up, but I managed to snag a size 2!
It was around 10 I believe and the store was closing at 11. I guess the employees were putting out sale inventory for the next day that evening so I managed to get first dibs on the sale. One thing that I've learned about Urban is that their sales online and in stores are the same, except the prices are always 100% lower in store than online. So if you can avoid it, try to always shop Urban sales in store than online.

It's not always all about timing, though. Sometimes, it just takes a keen eye and being resourceful. When you find a specific dress or pair of shoes that you like, get the item name and search online for other retails that carry it for less, with no shipping charges, or some online retails may be having a sale. My Rosegold heels that I got are currently on Urban Outfitters at full price for $168. I got them for $77 because Tobi.com was having a sale on them, in addition to another 30% off on sale items. Not to mention free shipping.

Mailing lists. This is a big one. If you can avoid the urge to splurge every day when Barney's sends out their mailers, you can save up to take full advantage for when they give their email subscribers first notice of their sale! I've gotten my coveted YSL caged heels from them at 50% off. (It was impulsive and I ended up not liking them as much so I returned them... I regret that decision to this day!) Barney's always has the best sales, including Louboutins and Monolos. Net-a-porter, Edit New York, Shopbop, Oaknyc...the list goes on.

EVERYTHING goes on sale. This is the biggest key thing to remember. No matter how enticing it is when you first see it to buy it right away, remind yourself, in a matter of weeks it will go on sale for much much cheaper. You don't want to be the fool that paid full price, only to find that item is now 50% off two weeks later, do you?

Remember, it pays to shop around. That way, you have extra to spend on more.

too trusting?

11:14 PM
Sometimes I think I'm too trusting. I let people in way too easily because I believe in the goodness of others. I think everyone is beautiful and loving and kind. Too often then not, do I find that people take advantage of my trust to social climb, to benefit themselves, and to use others. I'm learning slowly, and I don't like it--I don't like to have my guard up--to take things at face value and account for others based on their actions and not their words.

I still believe that people are loving and just want to be loved. It's just that most of them are not happy, and some of them go about achieving it in destructive hurtful ways. I cut them out, but there will always be a part of me who wishes them well, even if they were horrible to me. I just can't help it.

random strangers

1:30 AM
One of my best weekends yet in the city. i had a photoshoot with one of my favorite people and friend. I don't even want to call him a photographer because to me, he's a friend, not a profession.

After the shoot, I headed straight for the Alexander Wang Sample Sale on 93 Mercer. It was the 3rd day of the sale so it was slim pickings. There were no handbags left (crushed), nor shoes (majorly crushed...ugh, don't want to think about it). But I did manage to grab a cute pair of white high waisted shorts, a unique black dress (that I have to figure out how wear in public), and long tee shirt/dress thing. I really can't complain since this is probably the only chance I could ever really walk away with 3 pieces from Alexander Wang without feeling buyers remorse.

It was an open dressing room, meaning they space off a little corner, place full length mirrors along the walls, and its guerrilla style from there; no curtains, no dividers, no privacy. I sort of enjoyed it. ;) The girls around me were helping each other out with zippers, fitting, and giving each other their opinions on outfits. Everyone was surprisingly supportive and sweet.

P.s. To the SALESGIRL at the sale: Thanks so much for the compliment and reading my blog! I really was surprised anyone ever read this, so you made my day. I'm sad I did not get your name. I have a very important question to ask: Do they still need interns?! =P I'm dead serious, by the way.

That night we went to eat at L'artusi, so I took the opportunity to wear the white shorts. I'm usually against matching my tops with my shoes, but I couldn't resist. I think royal blue is really growing on me.

On the trip home tonight, I purposely put my luggage on the seat next to me to deter any one from sitting down. I like to ride alone as I find that most people annoy me. I almost succeeded until the very last minute, when a girl got on and insisted that I move my bag because the bus was full. I reluctantly obliged, but I wasn't happy about it. So we kept to ourselves and I napped to avoid seething about the fact that I had to share my space. After a rest stop, a small incident got us talking, so much so that we ended up chatting for the 3 hours left over of the trip. Time flew by. She was worldly, intelligent. A world traveler, earning her masters in Sweden. As we parted ways, she asked me to be friends on Facebook and I was so glad she did. And to think, I didn't even want her to sit next to me.

attraction

4:10 PM
the people who come into your life, no matter how seemingly random, it should come as no surprise that you play a big part in attracting those who you attract. from the people you repel because of the impression that you give off, to the people who feel compelled to say hi and start a conversation.

The energy that you give out, is the energy that you will receive. so put out some good vibes today. happy friday.
