winding down

8:42 PM

a little too early to be winding down, considering it's not even Christmas Eve yet, but I finished all my shopping early that all there is left to do is wait.

wait for the right time to give. wait for them to open it. wait for their reaction. wait for the year to reset itself.

having spent a good amount of my life time in waiting rooms before, i've learned that the best thing to do while waiting is to get enraptured in a book. and to put yourself in a position where you cannot see the clock. and to pretend you don't have a blackberry. rather than being a distraction, my blackberry only makes me more jittery.

and as the decade is coming to an end, i am inundated with countless 'list of the decades' every where I go: salon.com, new york times, npr.org to name a few. "Movies of the Decade." "Books of the Decade." "Songs of the Decade." This could go on forever, and who are these people to be so presumptuous to be telling us what our preferences of the decade should be?

And what is with the human need to be constantly archive things hierarchically? Why is it always a competition?

I digress.

I hope your year was full of progress, full of revelations, change, and evolutions. Happy Early Christmas and New Years!

Longing, by Sara Teasdale

I am not sorry for my soul
That it must go unsatisfied,
For it can live a thousand times,
Eternity is deep and wide.

I am not sorry for my soul,
But oh, my body that must go
Back to a little drift of dust
Without the joy it longed to know.

I don't know how some people live without ever letting themselves experience the full spectrum of emotion that life has to offer. They shelter themselves through fear, religion, or hate. Do they think they were put here on this earth merely to avoid all earthly pleasure and pain? Why fight so much? What are you fighting for?

How can one let such things allude one for so long? It's almost an insult to the host. Life will break you. The things that hurt you and nourish you will evolve you if you let it. It's a shame to go through life asleep, unaware of what you can become when you hide sheepishly behind the fear of the unknown. Life is so ugly, but so beautiful at the same time. And I think the moments when it hurts you, those are the moments where you have the most to gain.

But it's such a shame...

on the steps of a palace

10:45 PM

when I was in high school and hated my little farm town that my family had moved me to, I rebelled by listening to korean music. odd girl.

I got this random trance cd, and there was this beautiful song with a girl speaking over it, saying 'ask the wind, the birds what time it is...it's time to get drunk!'

Today, about 5 years (add or minus a few) later I finally found out what she was reciting, and I was relieved to know it wasn't Korean engrish:

One should always be drunk. That's the one thing that matters. In order not to feel the horrible burden of Time, which breaks your shoulders, and crushes you to the ground, one should be drunk without ceasing.

But on what? On wine, on poetry or on virtue, as it suits you. But get drunk.

And if sometimes, on the steps of a palace, on the green grass of a ditch, in the lonely gloom of your room, you wake up, the drunkenness already abated or completely gone, ask the wind, the wave, the star, the bird, the clock, everything that flies or groans or rolls or sings or speaks, ask everything what time it is; and the wind, the wave, the star, the bird, the clock will answer: 'Time to get drunk. In order not to be the martyred slaves of Time, get drunk. Get drunk ceaselessly. On wine, on poetry, or on virtue, as it suits you.'

He's a fascinating man. I always find indulgently decadent people intriguing. It's probably because I try to be the same way. Equating passion to drunkenness. Dionysus would be proud.

Hedonism is the only way to go in this world for you only live once. But better yet, you only die once.

i promised him i would go to bed

1:01 AM

...right after we got off the phone. but i had to post this:

"When you fall in love, it is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake, and then it subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots are become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the desire to mate every second of the day. It is not lying awake at night imagining that he is kissing every part of your body. No… don’t blush. I am telling you some truths. For that is just being in love; which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what is left over, when being in love has burned away. Doesn’t sound very exciting, does it? But it is!" -Captain Corelli’s Mandoli

life will break you

9:03 PM
I've been driven to misanthropy. I think it's from the constant contact with others. Growing up, I've always been pinned as a social butterfly. My reputation proceeds me sometimes and I didn't mind that strangers would say my name and how they've heard about me somewhere, somehow.

But then from all that socializing comes the inevitable drama. I avoid it like the plague, but it seems that in order to interact with others, one must also accept the possibilities that those interactions can one day grow stale or sour. They will betray you, annoy you, hurt you, and lie to you. They will steal from you--maybe nothing tangible, maybe it was your trust.

One part of me wants to continue to socialize and another part of me, that comes from being painfully perceptive, just wants to be a hermit forever. Never to have to deal with the anxiety of hosting a party, never to feel left out from group outings or 'the loop', never to feel the looming threat of fading friendships or of being forgotten entirely again.

and then I read this quote. And it woke me up.

"Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself you tasted as many as you could." -Louise Erdrich (The Painted Drum: A Novel)
